Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the questions people ask us most.
Starting a business and funding
Do I need a business plan?
Most lenders will ask for one, and it is a useful way to test your own idea. But a plan on its own is not enough. It needs realistic costs, sales forecasts, a cash-flow forecast and a clear explanation of how you will repay any borrowing.
Can you help if I have never run a business?
Yes. Many people we work with have never run a business. We explain each step in plain English and help you understand your own figures.
Can you help me work out how much money I need?
Yes. We work through what you need to buy, what it will cost and how much you need to cover running costs until sales build up.
Can you help me prepare financial forecasts?
Yes. We prepare pricing and sales assumptions, running costs, profit calculations, a twelve-month cash-flow forecast and, where appropriate, three-year projections.
Can you choose the best lender and apply for me?
For limited companies, yes. We research suitable lenders, recommend where to apply and act as your agent through the application. For sole traders and partnerships borrowing up to £25,000, this is a regulated activity and will be available once our FCA arrangements are in place. Until then, we prepare everything you need to apply yourself.
Yes. We research suitable lenders, recommend where to apply and act as your agent through the application, within the scope agreed in your quotation.
Not yet, as this service is coming soon. For now, we prepare your plan, figures and documents so that you can apply yourself.
Can you help me respond to questions from a lender?
Yes, within the scope agreed in your quotation.
We help you understand questions about your plan or figures and update your documents, within the agreed scope.
Will I definitely receive a loan?
No. Nobody can promise that. The lender makes the final decision based on its own criteria. We help you prepare a realistic, well-presented case.
What if my application is declined?
It can happen, even with good preparation. If a lender gives reasons, we can help you understand them and think about your options. Further work outside the agreed scope is quoted separately first.
Can I apply if I am currently employed?
You can use our services while you are employed. Whether a particular lender or scheme will accept you depends on its own published criteria, which we help you check.
Bookkeeping, accounts and tax
Can you do my bookkeeping?
Yes. We can record your income and spending and keep your records up to date, monthly or quarterly, as agreed.
Can you prepare my VAT returns?
Yes, for VAT-registered businesses. We prepare your returns from your records and submit them after your approval, using Making Tax Digital-compatible software.
Can you prepare my company's year-end accounts?
Yes, for limited companies. We prepare your annual accounts from your records and agree a timetable with you in advance.
Can you complete my Self Assessment tax return?
Yes, for sole traders and individuals. We prepare your return from your records, go through it with you and submit it only once you have approved it.
Who is responsible for my tax?
You remain legally responsible for your own tax affairs. We do the agreed work carefully and on time, provided we receive complete and accurate information when we need it.
Do I need to have used your start-up services first?
No. You can use our bookkeeping, accounts or tax services on their own.
Registration, brand and websites
Can you register my company?
Yes. We can guide you through forming a limited company with Companies House, or prepare and submit the application for you once we have completed the identity and anti-money-laundering checks we are required to carry out. Companies House charges its own fee.
Can you help me register with HMRC and for VAT?
Yes. We help you register for the taxes that apply to you, explain whether you need to register for VAT, and help you complete the registrations.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your circumstances. We explain the differences in tax, paperwork, personal liability and how others see each, so you can decide. Where you need specialist legal advice, we will tell you.
Can you design my logo and build my website?
Yes. We offer name and brand development, logo design, brand guidelines and website design. Domain names, email and hosting are paid by you directly to the provider, so they stay in your name.
Can you guarantee my website will rank on Google?
No. Nobody can guarantee search rankings. We set up clear content and the basic technical foundations that help search engines understand your site.
Fees and practicalities
How much do your services cost?
You can see our current prices on the pricing page. Your final price is confirmed in a written quotation before you commit.
Do I have to pay the entire fee upfront?
No. Payment terms, including any deposit, are set out in your written quotation before you commit.
How long does the process take?
It depends on the service and how quickly you can provide information. We give you a realistic estimate in your quotation.
What information will you need from me?
At first, just a description of your business and what you need. Later, we may ask for details such as costs, prices, your records and, if you agree, your household budget. We never ask for bank statements, identity documents or credit reports through our website.
